UMDGEN 4.0

UMDGen 4

Compress iso’s and cso’s You can also change a cso into a iso, and you can rip music from games and stuff.

Change Log / Features:

1- New layout
2- UMDGen now displays information from UPDATE\PARAM.SFO as well as
PSP_GAME\PARAM.SFO
3- Optimize button added. This function automatically detects and resizes
dummy data, removed un-needed padding and dummies the contents
of the UPDATE folder (if detected)
4- Non-PSP standard images can be forced to be read by the user. Upon
detection, UMDGen will let you know the image is non-standard and
you can choose whether to continue and have UMDGen attempt to read
it - *NOTE* depending on the individual image, this could cause UMDGen
to close if it encounters data it isn't expecting - but the general rule is
if the PSP can read it then presume UMDGen can too.
5- UMD_DATA.BIN file generator. If your compilation is missing this file
then UMDGen gives you the oppertunity to create a new one.
6- Ability to change "PSP_SYSTEM_VER" in PARAM.SFO to different firmware
version. (Use +/- key while version is selected)
7- 'Drop Open' images re-introduced due to a lot of requests to re-add it
to UMDGen.
8- Complete CSO + DAX support. You can now edit compressed images
the same as uncompressed images. Dax support now includes the use
of Non-Compressed areas feature.
9- 'Ezip' format removed. We didn't think it was worth keeping this
format since it only had very limited support anyway.
10- 'Dummy File' option added as requested by many users.
11- v3.50 still had trouble with one or two problem images. A lot of code to
do with the reading/writing process has been restructured and these
problems should now be fixed.

Ultimate Homebrew Guide v1

I. Homebrew Guide
First things first, you will need to know what firmware your psp has. This is very important. Simply power on the psp, under settings, go to "System Settings", then "System Information".

Under System SOftware, you will see a version number. If you have a 1.0 or 1.50, you can load homebrew onto the psp. If you have anything above version 1.50, see the F.A.Q. at the bottom of this post for downgrade information.

Installation on v1.0 Firmware:

You will need a usb cable and plug into your psp, then your computer. Power on the psp, go to "Settings", then "USB Connection". The computer should then detect the PSP and show up as a "Removable Disk" (The letter will vary from computer to computer).

All homebrew software on 1.0 Firmware psp must be located under MS:\PSP\GAME (where MS is the memory stick on your psp). You may need to create a game folder if there is not one already. Say, for example you have downloaded a NES emulator. It will most likely come zipped, so first thing you will want to unzip it.

After unzipping the application, somewhere within the unzipped folders you will see a file called "EBOOT.PBP". Create a folder in MS:\PSP\GAME\ according to what program you are putting in there. In this case, we'll call it "NES". Now, simply copy & paste, or drag and drop (whichever you prefer) into the MS:\PSP\GAME\NES folder (replace NES with whatever folder you created.)

That should be all that is required to run homebrew on a 1.0 Firmware PSP. The method for 1.50 Firmware is slightly more advanced.

Installation on 1.50 Firmware:

For this step, I recommend "Sei PSP Tool". It should do everything that will be required (plus more) to get all homebrew working on your 1.5 Firmware psp. You can download it HERE

After downloading Sei PSP Tool, Connect your PSP to a usb cable, then to your PC. Under Settings, go to "USB Connection" and your pc should automatically detect the PSP as a "Removable Drive".

Check to see what drive windows has assigned to the PSP by going to "My Computer" and finding the "Removable Disk".

For this example, we'll say my PSP is given drive F:. Just replace the letter of your drive when you are following this instructions. Have whatever homebrew application you have downloaded unzipped and ready to install on the PSP.

Open Sei PSP Tool, and type a name for your homebrew application. NOTE: Some homebrew applications require you place it in a certain directory, so read the instructions to make sure.

Now, select the EBOOT.PBP file that you want to load onto the psp by clicking the "...", then "From File" after "PBP File". Now, after PBP Unit:, select the drive letter assigned to your psp, here it will be F:.

More advanced users can customize the PBP file with custom ICON0.png and various other images and backgrounds, but that's a later guide Winking. The next option you have is to "Hide Corrupted image from list". Although this is not necessary, I highly recommend it. Normally when loading homebrew onto a 1.50 PSP, it will display a "Corrupted" image in your program list, Sei PSP Tool will hide this image for you, which is a very nice feature.

Next, click "Generate", then click "Export to PSP 1.5". You will then get a dialog telling you it has either failed or succeeded, if it fails, read the guide again to make sure you haven't missed a step.

Now you should be able to press O on the psp and go to "Game" then "Memory Stick" and select the program you just loaded using Sei's PSP Tool.

F.A.Q:

Q: Can I run homebrew on a v1.51 or v1.52 PSP?
A: Yes! You can now upgrade your 1.51 or 1.52 PSP to 2.0, then downgrade to 1.50

Q: So, what is firmware?
A: Firmware can also be referred to as the PSP's "Operating System". It contains all the code to make the PSP run correctly. There are 6 known firmware versions as of now, there are: 1.00, 1.50, 1.51, 1.52, 2.0, and 2.01 (JP only right now)

Q:does it re configure your entire PSP to a third-Party setup??? Like a Hack? And what is Homebrew

A:No, the tool won't alter anything on your psp other than creating a couple directories. You don't HAVE to use Sei's PSP tool, but I highly recommend it if you are new to putting applications on the psp.

The 'I Just Got My PSP' Tutorial v1

Boxed

1- Introduction:
Congratulations! You’re the owner of one of the most dynamic entertainment devices ever created. With your new PSP, your photos, music and videos are always just a flick of the power switch away. Maximizing your ‘PSP experience’ shouldn’t be a difficult task, and with the help of this and other guides; you should be well on your way to portable bliss.
This guide was written to serve as a source of answers for new PSP owners who are either confused by, or haven’t bothered reading the PSP manual.

2- Out of the Box
Well, you got the thing… let’s get the box open.
Box Contents (Value Pack)
PSP System
AC Power Cord
AC Adapter
Battery Pack
Headphones with Remote Control
32MB Memory Stick Duo
Write Strap
Pouch
Cleaning Cloth
Manual
UMD Demo Disc

Not in the box
USB (Full ~ Mini) Cord
Memory Stick Reader

The PSP Value Pack includes everything you need to start enjoying game’s and other UMD media. What it doesn’t come with is a way to move media both to and from your Memory Stick Duo. To do this you need to purchase a USB (Full ~ Mini) Cord or a PC based Memory Stick Reader. Most digital cameras come with a USB cord that can be used with the PSP. If you own a digital camera, you may already have the necessary connections.

3- Initial Setup and Charging
Grab your PSP manual. If you don’t have one then the online version can be found here .
I’m not going to re-type what’s already been written. What I will do though is point you directly to the pages of the manual that correspond to what we’re talking about here.

Getting Started

Insert the PSP Battery Pack (Pg. 25)
Charging (Pg. 26 and 38)
Initial Setup (Pg 27)

Once you’ve completed the Initial setup as instructed in the PSP manual; it’s a good idea to check your firmware version. PSP’s manufactured for North American consumers ship with firmware version 1.50 or 1.52. While there are external indicators as to what firmware version your PSP has, the easiest and most accurate way is to simply check the PSP’s settings menu.

Scroll to the ‘Settings’ selection on the far left of the PSP menu.
Scroll down to the ‘System Settings’ menu and press the X button.
Scroll down to the ‘System Information’ menu and press the X button.

At this point you should be presented with a screen displaying the MAC Address, System Software, and the Nickname you’ve given your PSP. The number listed after ‘Version’ indicates what version firmware your PSP currently has.

Version 1.00: Homebrew friendly, JDM PSP.
Version 1.50: Homebrew friendly after exploits.
Version 1.52: Not homebrew friendly. No known working exploits.
Version 1.51: Not homebrew friendly, but that’s the least of your problems.

As stated earlier, North American PSP’s shipped with firmware versions 1.50 or 1.52. Version 1.51 was released as a network update over a month before the exploitable flaws of Version 1.50 were discovered. If your new PSP states its version 1.51 then it’s safe to assume that it isn’t new at all. It’s very likely that you’ve purchased a returned PSP that’s been resold as new.

Adding and Organizing Media (Photos/Music/Movies)

One of the PSP’s best features is its ability to display and playback various media types. These media types include JPEG pictures, MP3 and ATRAC audio, and MP4 encoded video.

Formatting your Memory Stick Duo

Scroll to the ‘Settings’ menu and then to ‘System Settings’ and press X.
Scroll to ‘Format Memory Stick’ and press X.
When asked if you want to format the Memory Stick Duo highlight ‘Yes’ and press the X button.

Once the PSP is done formatting your Memory Stick Duo, you’re ready to connect it to your PC and complete the file structure setup.

If you’re using a USB cable connected to your PSP:

Exit the system settings menu, scroll up to ‘USB Connection’ and press X.
Connect the USB cable to your PSP as instructed in the manual. (Pg. 96)

Your PC should recognize the Memory Stick Duo and assign it a drive letter.

If you’re using a Memory Stick Reader:

Power you PSP off to insure it’s not attempting to access your Memory Stick Duo.
Remove your Memory Stick Duo from your PSP and insert it in your Memory Stick Reader.

Your PC should recognize the Memory Stick Duo and assign it a drive letter.

File Structure:

Root
DCIM (Folder)
101MSDCF (Folder)

MP_ROOT (Folder)
100MNV01 (Folder)

PSP (Folder)
GAME (Folder)
MUSIC (Folder)
PHOTO (Folder)
SAVEDATA (Folder)

MEMSTICK.IND (System File)

Pictures and Photos:
Root:PSPPHOTO
Root:PSPPHOTOFamily
Root:PSPPHOTOFamilyPark

Music and Audio

Root:PSPMUSIC
Root:PSPMUSICHip Hop
Root:PSPMUSICHip HopKanye West

Pictures and Music/Audio are the easiest to place correctly on the Memory Stick Duo. Simply place the Pictures or Audio files in the appropriate folders and the PSP will display them in its menu.

Reminder: Pictures MUST be in JPEG format and Music must be either MP3 or ATRAC.

Video:

The file structure for Videos is a little different. While the video files must be in the correct folder, they also must adhere to a very specific naming convention for the PSP to display them.

Root:MP_ROOT100MNV01 M4V10001.MP4
Root:MP_ROOT100MNV01 M4V10002.MP4
Root:MP_ROOT100MNV01 FamilyGuyEpe1.MP4

MP4 encoded videos must be named M4V*****.MP4 to be recognized by your PSP. The * in the file name represents a number from 0 – 9.

PSP Video 9 will convert, name and place video files properly on your PSP.

Once your Picture. Music and Video files anr tranferred to your Memory Stick Duo, you should be able to view them in the appropriate places in your PSP's menu.

It’s here! Dark_AleX has finally released custom firmware 3.80 M33 to the masses. As per usual, the latest edition in the M33 firmware series features all the enhancements included in official firmware 3.80, plus a load of extras.

Specific changes and bug fixes are outlined below.

* HEN core: user mode can load now sign checked files from flash.
* recovery: flash1 format will create flash1 directories after format.
This could fix some flash1 issues with the previous versions.
* Network update from dark-alex.org page. By default is enabled.
You can turn it off in recovery (when off, network update will download sony updates as usual).
* Nids resolver for various kernel libraries.

In addition, Alex notes that popsloader in its current form will not work with 3.80 M33. A new version compatible with 3.80 M33 will be released shortly.

Update: Dark_AleX has sent word that a 1.5 kernel add-on for regular PSP units is currently in the works. Expect a release soon.

____________________________________________________

Installation Guide

First grab the 3.80 M33 files and extract them.
1. Copy the UPDATE folder contained in the archive to X:/PSP/GAME
2. Download the 3.80 EBOOT, and then place it in X:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE
3. Navigate to the Game menu on the PSP and execute the program, it will not run unless there is 78 percent battery free.
4. Press X and the update process will start. Yes it may look similar to a regular Sony update but don't worry!
5. Once finished, the updater will ask you to press X or O to reboot. You MUST do this, otherwise you'll end up with a brick.
6. You've successfully installed 3.80 M33!

Downgrading 3.03 and below to 1.50 + Installing 3.10OE-A' The Complete Guide!

sony-psp

Downgrading 3.03 and below to 1.50 + Installing 3.10OE-A'
Heres the ultimate guide how to get Custom Firmware installed on your PSP to play Homebrew, PSP and PSX games.
I wrote this to help everyone who is new to the PSP, so feel free to share this guide with other people.
You will need winrar to extract the files you download, you can get winrar for free here: http://www.rarlabs.com/download.htm
You can downgrade and install custom firmware on all PSPs that have firmware 3.03 and below...
Firmware 3.10 and higher is not capable of being downgraded and having custom firmware installed on it at the moment...
Scroll down to the "Gathering information about your PSP" Section for more information about what you need to do...
Guide Updates: (Currently: Ver. 14)
Replaced the Old downgraders with the new "IdStorage Corruption-Free" downgraders.

/!\ Warning: /!\
Upgrading / Downgrading your PSPs firmware will write to the 'flash memory' of your PSP.
There is a very small risk of bricking your PSP when writing to flash memory.
All downgrades should be successful if you follow the instructions carefully and correctly.
Although you may be one of the unlucky few that the downgrade fails on.
By following this guide you understand the risks you are taking with your PSP.
Formatting your memory stick will erase 'everything' on it.
Please make a backup copy of any important files to your computer before you continue.
(Like the savegames in your \PSP\SAVEDATA\ folder and any video / music / pictures you may have.)
Note: After installing the required files to your memory stick, wait for about 1 minute before closing the
USB connection and disconnecting the USB cable, Sometimes windows will keep the data in memory
and will write that data to the memory stick even after the installation looks like has successfully finished.

What is Custom Firmware??
Custom firmware replaces your PSPs official firmware but it is not a permanent upgrade.
You can easily uninstall the custom firmware and to back to official firmware 1.50
by using the recovery mode if you don't like / don't want to use custom firmware.
Custom Firmware has all the features of the official sony firmware, but also adds the ability
to load homebrew PSP ISOs and PSX EBOOTs directly from the game menu in the XMB.
Custom Firmware also has an option to use 'No-UMD Mode' so you can run your PSP ISOs without a UMD inserted.
The No-UMD mode doesn't have a high compatability rate yet, so only a few games will work with it enabled.
If you have any PSP ISOs in the DAX format then you need to convert them to ISO or CSO using UMDGEN.
Custom Firmware currently doesn't support the DAX format yet but it has planned for the future versions.
You shouldn't need to use devhook to play your ISO/CSO files anymore as 3.10OE compatability rate is very high.
There may be a few games that are not compatible with Custom Firmware so you may need to use Devhook to play some games.
You will need to have a Game or Demo UMD disc in your PSP when you want to run PSP ISOs.
(Movie UMDs will not work and give an 'invalid region' error when starting a PSP ISO)
Your PSPs UMD Drive should be empty while upgrading / downgrading your PSP.
(Except when downgrading from 3.03 as you need the GTA:LCS UMD inserted to start the downgrader)
Remove the UMD you have in your PSP before you do anything in this guide.
If you don't have a USB cable but you have a memory card
